It sure is Monday and I came across this little gem this morning about In-N-Out Burger. You know the burger joint mentioned in The Big Lebowski. It just might be a great example on how to run a Michigan fly fishing magazine.
Its a private company that is owned (Okay, half owned for the time being) by a young lady who is making a lot of money; but that really isn't why I want to talk about In-N-Out Burger.
People do a lot of speculating about the company since they really don't know ... its private and doesn't have to report to anybody. The numbers are not available. They speculate that the company maintains 20% margins on their products. That's a pretty good margin Walter. Here are some facts about In-N-Out.
They maintain slow growth and don't offer franchises. They have two patty facilities where the beef is delivered the patties are made and then the patties are loaded on trucks and delivered fresh to the restaurants. They have two patty operations, one in California and one in Texas, and the proximity of their restaurants are determined by the range of the trucks from those patty centers. The menu doesn't change. So, in essence, the good old days are right now and everyday in the future.
Oh yeah, they have biblical citations on their cups and wrappers.
Slow and steady wins the race? Maybe, as they just found out that Ms. Torres is a billionaire.
